My favorite "school days" hang outs or other places:
Martha's Welsh's house: She had guinea pigs and an alligator. Connie Perkins' house: She had a pool. Janice Feinstein's house: Perpetually stocked with after-school snacks from the Helms Bakery delivery truck. Jean Magistrale's house: Limited parental supervision.
What athletic programs, teams or activities did you participate in while you were at SPJHS or SPHS?
Go Mustangs.
What organizations, clubs or groups did you belong to during your school years in South Pasadena?
Often making an ass of myself in talent shows and drama productions, or unsuccessfully trying to draw as well as Frank Lloyd, Justine Limpus and Stefanie Clark.
Joining Junior Statesmen of America because I got to constantly go to Berkeley and San Francisco during the height of the 60s.
I also managed to cut short my burgeoning career as a Co-Yearbook Editor by pissing off the eternally petty Barbara Ercek so badly in 10th grade Journalism that she threw Martha Welsh and me out as editors. During a rare moment of high school clarity, I realized that Ercek was retaliating by starting to give me undeserved crappy grades on my "news" stories. Retaliating in kind, I began handing off my homework assignments to my Pulitzer Prize-winning, newspaper reporter father, so he could act as my living scientific Control Factor. When he got his third "C" in a row, I though he was going to blow an artery in his head.
Do you get back to South Pasadena?
Yes. My mother still lives there. So does Justine Limpus Parish. Sometimes Justine and I can coordinate for lunch.
I also like the sushi section at Bristol Farms. It's a big draw.
What I always wanted to do that I haven’t done yet:
Keep my weight level for one year.
My "Goals in Life" or "Hopes & Dreams":
Not give my son any reason to ever put me in a home.
What or who influenced you most back in high school?
YIN: Genevieve Murguia in Junior High School. Best teacher I had in any subject anywhere.
YANG: Helen Burr in High School. My 42-year ongoing thesis about Helen Burr and the repercussions of her particular teaching paradigm applied to decades of vulnerable high school students will be completed and available for publication some time in the near future.
My Favorite Quote:
For the Advanced Spanish students:
"No comprendo siempre, pero sigo trabajando."
"In la tierra del ciego, el tuerto es rey."
"El vino no vino vino, el vino vino vinagre."
If I had a time machine, and could travel back to 1966-1969, I would....
Fight over who got to drive the car less with my brother.
