I spoke with Karen's aunt, Alice Graves Gardner, about two years ago; she confirmed that Karen committed suicide in the early 70s. It gets worse: I had reached Mrs. Gardner to try to find my old friend Susan Gardner (from Oneonta years) and found that Susan was shot and killed by a stranger while in a San Diego laundromat, just a few months before her cousin Karen's suicide. The case was never solved.

Karen and her family moved to Alaska around 11th grade. She loved Alaska and the freedom she felt there. She "didn't even have to carry her drivers license while driving" I remember her telling me the last time I saw her. She'd married and had a young son but was going through a difficult divorce when she took her life. Karen was sooooo alive and the loss saddens me even now. I remember having photography class with her and rather than comb the campus looking to take pictures, we looked for unlocked lockers with lunch bags instead..sorry.. anyway thats all we ever took and it was more the thrill of the hunt. Oh and I never locked my locker either

Once Karen, Pat McCue,  Boris Sverev And I hitchhiked to Haight Ashbury in 1967.   The last time I saw her was when she, George Reasons and I went to a wedding in Pasadena.  In the middle of the ceremony George passed out and fell flat on his face on the brick patio.
